Whether you’ve got brick or stucco, painting the exterior of your home is the perfect way to give your space a facelift. Over time, paint begins to fade and chip. This leaves your home exposed to the elements and without this additional layer of protection. Whether you are looking to repair damaged paint or update the look of your home, here are a few things you can do to prepare for exterior painting in Kennesaw. - Clean the area that you’re painting. The exterior surface of your home has gathered dust and debris over time. Whether from rain or the wind, it’s important to remove any dirt that is on the surface of your home. Depending on the exterior material on your home, you may be able to use a pressure washer. If that’s not an option, a gentle scrub brush, water, and soap will do the trick. A clean surface ensures that the color remains true when applied.
- Get rid of any loose paint. If your old paint color is beginning to chip or strip, you need to remove it before painting. Using a brush or a sander, scrape away any loose paint. It’s not necessary to remove all of the old paint before applying a fresh coat. You just need to remove any uneven or loose pieces.
- Remove old caulk and replace it with fresh product. Like paint, exterior caulk yellows and fades over time. Don’t let caulk bring your new paint job down. Replace it with fresh product to better protect your home and keep your paint looking sharp.
- Repair any cracks. Whether you have cracks around your windows or imperfections on the exterior of your home, now is the perfect time to repair them. Take the time to sand, re-putty, and repair any of the issues that could muddy your new paint job. This ensures that your exterior looks seamlessly smooth once the paint has dried.
- Apply primer if needed. In the areas where repairs have been made or you’ve used a sander, you may need to use a primer. This ensures that the color you apply matches the other areas of the surface. Follow the instructions from the manufacturer to ensure that your primer is applied correctly, then allow it to dry adequately before beginning to paint.
- Tape, tarp, and prep. Once everything has been sanded and primed, it’s time to prep your area to be painted. Tape off anything that the paint shouldn’t come in contact with. This includes windows, doors, and trim. Place tarps over plants and shrubs to prevent paint from dripping on them. Finally, make sure you have all of the necessary equipment to reach the exterior surfaces of your home.
While you can do your exterior painting in Kennesaw on your own, hiring a professional is the best way to ensure the job is done right. With the help of an expert painting company, all you have to do is pick out your color and watch as your space is transformed!
