- Tape, tarp, and prep. Once everything has been sanded and primed, it’s time to prep your area to be painted. Tape off anything that the paint shouldn’t come in contact with. This includes windows, doors, and trim. Place tarps over plants and shrubs to prevent paint from dripping on them. Finally, make sure you have all of the necessary equipment to reach the exterior surfaces of your home.
