Even the best managed hotel is not really immune to a fire hazard. On the contrary, hotels and rest houses are considered especially susceptible to fire as these are high-risk areas frequented by hundreds each day. A second's carelessness can easily negate the best fire management protocol of a hotel. As a hotel owner or manager, you should therefore be extra cautious about implementing all fire safety regulations in your premises including installation of fire exit signs at appropriate places. Assessing the Risk Correct risk assessment is the first step towards minimizing the dangers of unexpected fire in your hotel premises. You should always follow a routine for thorough inspection of all the nooks and corners of the property at regular intervals for signs of impending danger. Kitchen, dining space or any such area where a fire is common should receive special attention. You should also hire a trained electrician to come over and check the condition of all wires and electrical connections periodically. Training your Staff Your staff can play a vital role in keeping the hotel premises as safe as possible against a potential fire risk outbreak. In many cases, alert hotel staff are able to prevent a major fire outbreak if they are aware of the initial danger signs and know what to do in case of an emergency. All staff members should be made fully aware of all fire fighting devices on the property and how to use them quickly, safely and correctly. They should also be aware of all fire prevention signage and their meanings such as 'no smoking', 'file alarm', 'fire extinguisher' 'no litter', fire exit signs and so on. Kitchen staff should be handed a list of do's and don'ts so that they know exactly how to prevent a fire outbreak from the kitchen. All staff must know the emergency number of your local fire brigade so that any person can call the fire department without waiting for the designated person to arrive. Involving your Guests As a hotel owner, the onus is on you to make your guests aware of all fire safety regulations on your premises. All rooms must have advisory signs requesting guests to switch off all electrical devices when they are not in their rooms. Guests must be made aware of the importance of 'no smoking' and 'no litter' signs towards fire management. They should also know whom to call in case they see signs of fire or smoke in their room. Running away in panic will only worsen the situation so each room must have a specific emergency number for guests to contact in case of fire outbreak. Installing Fire Protection Equipments For dealing with a fire outbreak, standard regulations require you to have all fire fighting equipments such as emergency lighting, fire warning system, automatic fire detectors, fire extinguishers, sprinklers and so on. These must be serviced regularly by trainer personnel so that they are in working condition just when required.
