Termites are destructive creatures that, although they serve a natural purpose in breaking down dead plant matter, are completely unwanted on your property. Thankfully, there are a few easy ways to deter them from your yard and house. Here are 4 methods that work, and many of them are free. You will only need to hire professional stump grinding in Athens instead of pricey and intensive pest control. Use these methods today. - Cardboard traps are effective for collecting large groups of termites and then disposing of them. Wet cardboard emits an odor that attracts termites, especially females. Leave one of these cardboard traps near suspected termite-infested areas and they will flock to the cardboard. Once this happens, you can safely dispose of the box in a sealed receptacle.
- Termites are highly vulnerable to sunlight. Prolonged sun exposure can actually kill them, so termites avoid bright areas. Try to keep your plants well-manicured so that dark canopies do not form. Space out large trees so that sunlight can still reach your lawn, especially the perimeter of your home. If you feel that termites are already on your property, clear the area so that sunlight can directly reach the horde. They will quickly retreat from the area.
- Because dead trees are food for termites, you should try to dispose of any dead organic matter in your yard. If you have chopped down a tree recently, be sure to hire stump grinding so that the remains of the tree above ground will be eliminated. When this happens, you will deprive termites of a natural food source. They will be forced to migrate to a property that has dead plant matter to eat. Stump grinding is quick and inexpensive to hire.
- Orange oil is a natural, pesticide-free solution to termite problems. Orange oil naturally kills termites on contact so they know to fear its scent. Place drops of orange oil near suspect areas or simply spray it around your yard. You can even form a barrier around outdoor decks so termites do not begin nesting in these areas.
All of the above are naturally safe and inexpensive solutions to potential termite problems. Stay on top of all 4 of these steps to naturally deter them. Possibly your best line of defense against these pests, though, is to hire expert stump grinding in Athens so you do not leave food out for hungry hordes of termite pests.
