South America's Most Idyllic Beach Escapes

Travel & Tourism
Beauty spots of white sand, turquoise waters, and towering tropical palms. You really are spoilt for choice with the South American coast - whether it's the Atlantic, Pacific, or the Caribbean, you’ll be able to bask in the hot sun, cocktail in hand, and toes nestled in the golden sand.

What makes South America stand out though is the characteristically friendly festivals which burst with colour, passion and stunning pageantry. A beach holiday in South America is a great choice for friends (or couples) looking to blow off some steam at surf towns with electric party vibes, and private resorts are ready to accommodate the need to get away from a dreary western winter.

Here is my personal top pick:

1. Jericoacoara

• Terrific Ambience and Impressive Sandy Dunes that Dominate the Landscape

This beautiful isolated beach off the coast of Brazil boasts an intoxicating and unspoilt ambience as you can immerse yourself in traditional activities like windsurfing and Capoeira. It's hard to reach locations and unpaved roads give Jericoacoara an intoxicating allure of retained dignity as a place of living before a holiday resort. This feeling is encapsulated in some of the brilliant sunsets that can be experienced by climbing the isolated, marble-like dunes that dominate the landscape.

This feeling isn’t lost at night as boutiques, quaint bars, and restaurants bask under the glow of the moonlight, which creates a very intimate and cosy atmosphere. Simply magical.

South America Travel Insurance: InsureMore offers 24-hour emergency service and speedy online claims.

2. Shell Beach

• The Famed Beach For the 4 Legged Amphibians That Use This Paradise Island As a Nesting Spot (Who Can Blame Them!)

Every year from spring to mid-summer, four different species of turtle return to this 90 mile stretch of coastline in Northwest Guyana to begin the miraculous process of raising their young. The beach is speckled with the tiny porcelain-like shells of their forbearers, and watching the turtles, like the endangered Olive Ridley, saunter up along the beach and dig among the shells to lay eggs is truly unforgettable. As is the nature of turtles, typically being solitary creatures, this is one of the few places where you can see them in them at their most precious stage. And like the first entry in this list, Shell Beach has a retained dignity as accommodation is provided in its friendly villages.

South America Travel Insurance: InsureMore offers free cover against timeshare cancellation.

3. El Cabo San Juan Beach

Relax In a Hammock While Gazing At the Stars

The most popular of the beaches in the Tayrona national park, El Cabo, has a somewhat adventurous air about it as it takes some effort getting to. But, once you start to hear the sweet sounds of crashing waves followed by the beach opening before your eyes, it’s well worth the trek. The iconic views will be singed into your mind, as you’ll be easily impressed by the sandy shores which are squeezed in between lines of towering coconut trees. Out of all of the beaches in Tayrona, it also holds the accolade of being the only one that is safe to swim in!

The experience of El Cabo isn’t complete until you spend a night in the famous bungalow. This quaint hut sits on a rocky formation which is blanketed in an almost moss-like sheet of vegetation. It makes for one of the most serene experiences imaginable (and quite romantic to boot!) being perched high above the shoreline, hundreds of stars in view, and being lullabied to sleep by the gentle sounds of the water.

South America Travel Insurance: InsureMore offers free cover for business trips.

4. Los Roques

• Island-Hop to the Paradise of Your Dreams

This incredible chain of Caribbean island off the Venezuelan coast is amongst the best diving and snorkelling destinations in South America. Picture a pallet of tranquil blue water, powder white sands, deep blue skies, and lively green palms which sway in the gentle Caribbean heat. You can’t go wrong at Los Roques as the island hopping nature of the holiday means that you can experience a number of islands in a single day and find one to your liking. Even one that is virtually empty if you want to feel like you own a private island!

While the beaches draw in the humans, majestic coral reefs draw in the sea life which makes Los Roques a must for any snorkeler and diver. Vibrant sea fans, sea turtles, manta rays, and huge school’s Jacks can be discovered by those willing to search.
