Keeping Your Divorce Civil

Law

There’s a reason that divorce is listed as one of the most stressful life events. It’s a highly emotional time that can leave you feeling drained. In many cases, divorce brings out the worst in people. It pits spouses against each other, leaves in-laws feeling bitter, and affects the children involved. While divorce isn’t always avoidable, there are ways to make it more amicable. To ensure that things remain civil between you and your spouse throughout the course of your divorce proceedings, here are a few things that your Stephenville divorce lawyer recommends.

  • Keep your thoughts to yourself. It’s normal to have negative feelings toward your spouse throughout your divorce. It’s even normal to feel angry, upset, or extremely sad. No matter how frustrated you might feel, avoid sharing these private thoughts with others. It’s especially important to keep your opinions off social media. By sharing your negative thoughts with your children, friends, family, or even your spouse, you create a negative atmosphere where conflict rules. It will impact any future relationships and communications.
  • Build up a safe support system. Even though it’s not appropriate to drag your spouse’s name through the mud in a public forum, find a private place where you can express your feelings. Locate a support group or therapist who can help you make sense of your feelings and heal throughout the process.
  • While you may feel like your kids are your allies, it’s important to keep them out of the situation. Even though they know both you and your spouse well, that doesn’t mean that they are there to listen. In fact, venting to your children about your divorce is very detrimental. Speak with your spouse and make your expectations clear in the beginning—there will be no bad-mouthing each other in front of the kids. The only thing that matters is that your children feel loved and supported by both parents.
  • The main goal throughout your divorce proceedings is not to get revenge or be proved right, but to focus on resolving problems. It doesn’t matter what the reason is for your divorce; it’s time to focus on something bigger. Seeking revenge will only prolong the process and cost you more money in the long run. Instead of trying to prove that you were right, focus on the issues at hand. The more amicable you can be throughout the process, the quicker it will be over.
  • Don’t forget to hire an attorney. It’s not uncommon for divorcing couples to have issues when dividing assets and seeking custody arrangements. To help with the negotiations, hire an attorney. These professionals can lend an objective viewpoint to help you stay focused.

While a divorce is never pleasant, it doesn’t need to be devastating. With the help of the right Stephenville divorce lawyer and the advice above, you can create a civil environment in which to negotiate with your spouse. An amicable divorce makes it easier to resolve issues, come to an agreement, and move on with your life.
