For a family holiday full of sun, fun and happy memories, there is no destination more ideal than the beautiful Canaries. The weather is glorious, the flights frequent and not too long, and the culture is child-centric, with plenty of facilities to keep your little ones safe and entertained. Whether you’re going to Lanzarote or Tenerife, there’s also a wealth of family-friendly activities suitable for all ages which will ensure your holiday is one none of you will forget. |
What to Do
Children will never be bored in the Canaries with so many exciting things to do. Horse-riding is always extremely popular, with spots at Lanzarote a Caballo in Lanzarote and La Caldera del Rey in Tenerife. Taking a gentle ride through the gorgeous scenery is such a fun way to explore, and parents will definitely appreciate how relaxing it is!
To see the Canaries from a unique perspective, go adventuring in Lanzarote’s fascinating caves. Jameos del Agua and Cueva de los Verdes both have shining water pools and huge stalactites to marvel at, and are easily manageable even with prams and little ones in tow. Another highlight is the geysers at Timanfaya National Park, which are an unmissable natural wonder that’ll have the children shouting in delight.
If you want to push the excitement up a notch, the Canaries has some brilliant theme parks which are easily accessible from the resorts in Tenerife and Lanzarote. Tenerife has Siam Park, a waterpark with its own beach, a wave pool and rapids, while Lanzarote’s incredible Guinate Tropical Park has entertainment shows, an aquarium, botanical garden, and over 1,300 exotic birds!
What to See
Fun in the Canaries doesn’t always have to mean go-go-go, as there are plenty of opportunities for a less action-packed form of entertainment. Lanzarote’s Museo de la Pirateria is housed in the Canaries’ oldest castle, with a view over the whole island, and guarantees a wealth of pirate-themed fun.
In Tenerife, the Museo de la Ciencia y el Cosmos focuses on space and science, with an excellent planetarium that offers an immersive experience. The Museo de la Naturaleza y el Hombre is centred on archaeology and natural science, with a suitable scary exhibition of Guanche mummies.
All museums in the Canaries have great children’s facilities and cafés, and are all easily reachable from the resorts in Tenerife and Lanzarote.
Where to Play
You’ll be spoilt for choice with beaches in the Canaries, with a multitude of child-friendly, activity-filled options. Playa Grande in Lanzarote has an array of water sports available, including the unique bubble-maker courses. Two more great options are Playa Blanca and Playa del Castillo which both offer shallow waters and low tides, perfect for little ones.
Across the water, Los Cristianos boasts the best golden sands, as well as proximity to the theme parks, family-friendly restaurants and the resorts in Tenerife.
