Fenugreek is an ancient medicinal plant, and the plant is used in conjunction with alternative cancer treatment. New research shows that extracts from buckhorn horns are harmless to normal cells, but substances in the plant kill specific cancer cells. Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-Graecum L.) is one of the oldest known medicinal plants we have. It has been used for a long time in many medical connections. Fenugreek have also shown positive effects on blood sugar and diabetes, and to stimulate the production of NO in the body. Both seeds and leaves from the plant are used - and as mentioned, they are used against a variety of disorders all over the world. For various reasons, Fenugreek should not be used by pregnant women. Fenugreek is also used in the treatment of cancer in different parts of the world, perhaps especially in "alternative medicine". Based on a reported case of where a patient suffering from a severe type of cancer had improved. The researchers Alsemari, Alkhodairy, Aldakan, Al-Mohanna, Bahoush, Shinwari and Alaiya decided to have see if Fenugreek really could have some effect on cancer cells. The experiment was done in vitro, which means «outside of the body». Cancer cells in "test tubes" were exposed to extracts from Fenugreek, but the researchers also received consent to do a single study, or case study, of a patient with the serious form of cancer called «primarily central nervous system lymphoma". This type of cancer is characterized by cancer cells in the lymphatic tissue of the brain / spinal cord, and has a poor prognosis. By including this patient, the researchers also had access to "in vivo" (in the body) material. Both in vitro (outside the organism) and in vivo (inside the organism) investigations of the effect of the Fenugreek extract on cancer cells showed that the extracts had cytotoxic effects on certain cancer cells, but did not damage normal cells. "Cytotoxic effect" means that cells are damaged, and may be killed by the substance. The report showed that Fenugreek extract had a cytotoxic effect on T-cell lymphoma, B-cell lymphoma, a special type of thyroid cancer (FRO), and breast cancer (MCF7). It is also very interesting that the report finds that it is an extract of the "whole plant" which is most effective compared to extracts based on isolated components. The researchers conclude that extracts of hedgehog clover can probably be used therapeutically in terms of both preventing and treating several types of cancer, but more research is needed. Such findings are very promising for cancer treatment, as the use of this type of extract will most often be a much more gentle treatment compared to many of the more known types of chemotherapy and other types of treatment. However, as the report emphasizes, there is still a need for more research in the field, and it is important that all cancer treatment is carried out by qualified healthcare professionals.
