Taking final meter readings It’s an unglamorous task, but it’s nonetheless vital to take water, gas and electricity meter readings at your property and let your suppliers know prior to the move. This is easier to do than you might think – utility companies tend to have ‘change of address’ forms on their websites, or at least make it easy for you to call and email them with the essential details. It’s normally possible to move into a new property with the gas and electricity companies that you’re already signed up with – in which case, you just need to let them know and they will arrange the switch. 3. Applying for a parking permit One other frequently overlooked must-do among homeowners who also have a car is to check whether they are moving to a residents-only parking area, and if so, apply for a parking permit prior to the move, so that they can park legally outside the property as soon as they arrive. You will need to request a parking permit from your local council, or if it is a private residential parking scheme, directly through the company that runs it.
