Criminal law is a type of law that concerns the punishments of the people who commits the crime. The criminal law gives a guideline on how the government is to prosecute a person who has committed a crime. Federal, the local government, and State have the penal codes that explain how the criminal is to be punished and prohibits some punishments given to people who commit a crime. Individuals who violate the law in Federal, State or local government may face fines, incarceration or probation. Crime can be defined as any act that it is not acceptable. Crimes are defined by the stature and they vary greatly depending on the State and the counties. The common type of crimes is well elaborated by the Model Penal Code. The U.S Code has a list of the Federal crimes. Crimes can be classified as either felonies or misdemeanors. Felonies are crimes that are serious like the rape and murder and are punishable by a way of imprisonment of not less than a year. Misdemeanors are crimes that are less serious and are punishable by imprisonment of less than a year or fine can be imposed. The statutes break law into either act Reus or mens rea. For a person to be convicted of a certain crime, a prosecutor must show how the suspect met act Reus or mens rea.
