Today, technology has an essential role in the society. Every day we are witnessing new disruptive inventions that change our lives from machine learning, through artificial intelligence to transportation via self-driving cars. Indeed impressive. However, we need to be aware that there are both positive and negative effects of transportation technology. While new transportation technology brings us numerous benefits, there are also some fears concerning our safety. Forces of disruption in transportation There are four forces of today’s disruption in transportation. First is electrification of vehicles, which will be more efficient and environmentally sustainable than today's motor powertrain. The second is connectivity through digitization, which will allow the transfer of a large amount of information easily and rapidly between cars, cars and cities, and cars and users. The third force is an advanced driver-assistance system that will allow autonomous, driverless driving. Finally, there is an advanced mobility in smart cities that will offer many new opportunities for our transport. Positive and negative effects of transportation technology Self-driving cars are really impressive invents. It will save our time, money and space. Cities will look totally different, while we will have so many opportunities for transport. Our air will be healthier as well. Automotive companies, like Tesla, Waymo, Volvo, Nissan, Mercedes-Benz, and others have already started to develop autonomous cars, while others, like Uber and Lyft already offer ridesharing and carsharing services. However, apart from good sides of autonomous cars, there are also some negative effects of transportation technology. For example, problems may occur with hacking, car crashing, and regulation of new transportation technologies. There is also a problem with the unpreparedness of cities for autonomous vehicles. Even if autonomous cars would be fully developed soon, cities are still not ready for their use. There is a lot of things to do to come to this point. Challenges for transportation technology Many believe that autonomous cars will decrease the number of car accidences and improve road safety. This probably will happen. However, there is another side of the coin. Since self-driving cars will exchange a lot of information, it is crucial to ensure the safety of data. Here electronic innovations can be very useful. There is also an issue with hacking autonomous cars that need to be resolved. Also, regulatory bodies need to find a solution to regulate this area, especially the cybersecurity, while automotive companies need to cooperate with others to ensure the safety of autonomous cars and passengers, other vehicles, and pedestrians. Recently four US states have introduced bills to restrict Google and Uber to use electric cars in their fleets unless they have cooperated with carmakers to ensure their safety, which definitely will affect the further self-driving cars development. Yet, these bills also should encourage them to develop the high-safety autonomous cars. Among the biggest problems in transportation now, and will be in the future as well, is the transportation infrastructure, particularly the connected transportation management system. Thus, innovation in this area will have the largest potential. Such system needs to cover needs of self-driving cars, common cars, passengers, and cities themselves. It needs to integrate an extremely large amount of information and coordinate a large number of people and vehicles to function smoothly, much better than today’s cities’ infrastructures that are under the great cards, there is a lot of things to do to reach the optimal transportation, especially in large cities. Anyway, the future of transportation brings us many new transportation opportunities. Besides autonomous cars, there will be ridesharing, carsharing, bullet trains, even flying cars and many others. Although some variations of these services and vehicles already exist, we can expect the much more advanced transportation technology in this area as well. Trains will go by the speed of more than 700 mph, while AeroMobile, for example, has already announced new flying cars for a few years. Imagine that! Our future surely will be exciting.
