Now that “health” is trending, it seems like we need a dictionary to figure out exactly what we should or shouldn’t be eating. With all of the propaganda out there it can get a little fuzzy on what exactly is healthy and what is not. Well, life just got a little easier with these healthy hints. The following foods may seem healthy, but there are a few hidden details you may want to know. Get the skinny on what’s up with these items below! 1. Unfermented soy products It’s harder for us to break down unfermented foods; soy is no different. Most of the soy products in America are genetically modified and most people don’t have the enzymes to break unfermented soy down in the gut. Non-organic soy is also said to contain a carcinogenic chemical. 2. Farmed fish like tilapia and Atlantic salmon ...or fake fish. Farmed fish don’t have nearly the high amount of benefits as its organic counterparts. People are also at risk for ingesting things that can cause cancer and other ailments. 3. Seitan Those who have a gluten intolerance or allergy should stay clear of this particular “health” food. It is basically wheat gluten and it’s very high in sodium. Even if you don’t have a gluten issue, a high sodium intake could have negative effects on your body as well. 4. Agave Sometimes referred to as another word for high fructose corn syrup. It is highly processed and made of fructose which is the worst form of sugar. If you have to have sugar with your coffee, go ahead and use a natural organic sugar. Just remember to limit your intake. 5. Fat-free, low-fat dairy products Low fat or fat-free dairy products usually contain higher amounts of sugar for flavor. It also contributes to a higher chance of obesity. Those who consume regular dairy products also have a lesser chance for diabetes. 6. Non-organic meats You never know what you could be eating when consuming non-organic meats. Pesticides from the grass they eat, stress hormones caused by unruly living conditions, or contaminated meats due to any sickness the animal might have picked up 7. Margarine Trans fats increase the likelihood of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and strokes. Margarine is full of it. Despite the propaganda boasting of its health properties, the trade-off is much worse. 8. Microwave popcorn Popcorn is known for being a healthy, low-fat snack, but the flavoring and the bag it comes in gives off dangerous chemicals that can make their way from the microwave into the popcorn. But wait, there’s more! Sometimes the popcorn in these bags are not organic and are laced with pesticides. The flavoring may also be a factor in diseases and illnesses. It’s best to go organic here and invest in a popcorn air popper. 9. Dried fruits High in sugar! This health food can sneak up on you causing you to consume way more sugar than you had in mind. Yes, it tastes good and is made from real fruit, but a lot of companies add sugar and other ingredients to add to the sweetness of the snack. 10. Vegetable oils Pesticides may be the least of your worries with this popular ingredient. A lot of times these oils are genetically modified. With so much controversy and buzz about GMO foods, it’s better to just stay away. These oils can also be high in trans fats which come with an entirely different set of unhealthy risks factors.
