With the London Design Festival 2018 barely a month away, Team IAnD brings you the three top events to look out for at the annual designers’ Mecca! Time is rife to start making plans and scheduling your itinerary to check out the multifarious sides of a global design vocabulary. Our team has painstakingly put together three significant much-looked-forward-to events this LDF 2018. Here you go… The London Design Fair This go-to trade show that hosts the single largest collection of international exhibitions, designers, brands, country pavilions, features and galleries throughout the festival promises to be a melting pot of design from a wide range of cultures. Twelve country pavilions and one very special guest country – Japan - will exhibit an impressive array of products, alongside a smart international line-up of independent designers and brands. Moreover, London Design Fair welcomes the return of Envisions – an exhibition with the focus on the creative, research process that zeroes in on the Material of the Year - Plastic, which is the piping-hot topic of almost every economy today. The exhibition will showcase works of four multidisciplinary experimental designers, who are repurposing the material in imaginative and valuable ways, presenting refined responses to the single-use plastic problem. Global Design Forum LDF’s curated thought leadership programme, Global Design Forum celebrates design and the minds shaping its future. Taking place throughout the Festival at the V&A, the Forum features a unique mix of talks, debates, tours and workshops that together reflect the most innovative thinking in the world of design today. More than 50 of designs most exciting and influential thought leaders have been announced to speak as part of the 2018 programme. Speakers announced include Lord Richard Rogers, Ilse Crawford, Rankin, Marina Willer and Morag Myerscough. From 15–23 September speakers from all corners of the global design community will share new perspectives on designing for a shifting future. Landmark Projects Besides the iconic installations and special commissions at the V&A - the official London Design Festival hub - there will be three other landmark projects – the most intriguing one being at Regent Street - one of London’s leading lifestyle and shopping destinations. Landmark Project Trace by Architecture Social Club proposes to be a suspended installation designed to draw the viewer’s attention to the power of the natural environment as it interacts with the built environment and is inspired by The Crown Estate’s commitment to sustainability. Regent Street’s Grade II listed facades that represent some of the most distinguished architecture in London and the iconic curve of the street and height of its impressive Regency buildings means Regent Street has a higher wind speed than any other street in Central London. Reacting to light and wind, the installation will render the invisible visible, by harnessing the street’s wind power and changing light over the course of the day and night to prompt viewers to consider their own effects on the environments, which they inhabit. Rippling movements and hypnotic rhythms will create the sense of a living and breathing ecosystem – one that points towards a positive future, where sustainable living and working is ubiquitous and beautiful.
