Portuguese Resorts Perfect for Disabled Access Holidays

Travel & Tourism
Portugal is a beautiful country full of fabulous resorts and there’s no reason why using a wheelchair or requiring disabled access should be a barrier to all it has on offer. Many easily accessible destinations and beaches are located in the scenic southern region of the Algarve, not far from the city of Faro. Transfers from the airport can have you speeding away to one of these lovely destinations in no time.

The Allure of Albufeira

The charming nature of Albufeira helped to make the Algarve the tourist hotspot that it is today. This beachside destination offers something for everyone, whether you prefer lounging around all day in the sun, meandering through the old town or enjoying the nightlife.

The town meets the sea on a long stretch of beautifully unblemished beach. Once the sun goes down, the main strip really brightens up, and plenty of pubs and clubs are accessible to those with disabilities. Albufeira is also easy to reach; it’s less than an hour’s drive from the airport via one of the companies offering Faro transfers.

Quarteira’s Ocean Blue

Quarteira has grown in popularity in recent years, but it still offers its signature old world charm. Palm trees line the seaside Avenida Infante de Sagres, which is the town’s main promenade, and the sandy Blue Flag beach has been made accessible so it’s a great option for travellers with disabilities.

The city is just 20 minutes away from the airport. Secure a convenient ride complete with disability facilities by pre-booking a trip through a private company offering Faro transfers.

Luxurious Boat Trips from Vilamoura

Just up the road from Quarteira is Vilamoura, a city that offers some of the most luxurious accommodation and the highest calibre holidays. Visitors can lounge on the pristine sandy beaches, have a bite to eat at the marina’s upscale restaurants or even tour Roman ruins.

There are also options for accessible boat trips that give tourists a chance to spot dolphins frolicking in the sea. While onboard, you can gaze out at the length of the fabulous Portuguese coastline.

Something Different with Monte Gordo

Monte Gordo is located in the southeast, right on the Spanish border. As a result, it’s slightly different from other towns in the Algarve. The land is flatter, with beaches that feature sand dunes, and tourists find that the seawater is slightly warmer, which makes for a more enjoyable experience.

Partly because of the flatness, it is considered a prime destination for people with reduced mobility. The Praia de Monte Gordo is classified as an accessible beach and many of the areas in town are easy surfaces for wheelchairs.

How to Get There

Non-stop flights from London to Faro occur multiple times per day and take approximately three hours. Before you head off, pre-book a ride from the airport to your destination with one of the companies that offer Faro transfers. Doing this ahead of time will ensure your vehicle can accommodate those with disabilities.

Holidaymakers requiring an accessible adventure will have a great time at the beaches of southern Portugal. Whichever you decide to visit, a great holiday is waiting.
