For hundreds of years, we have seen the development of Vedic astrology. And today we also see many examples of Modern astrology. Both schools of thought have their followers who swear by them. But how about an unbiased neutral view of what is what? Let us look at a few comparisons. The first thing to understand is that the Vedic system of astrology, the zodiac has 27 fixed star groups. These groups are also called constellations. The first of these constellations is Ashwini or Aries. Vedic astrology follows a sidereal system. On the other hand, modern astrological thinking is tropical. It starts at an imaginary point in space where the Sun crosses the Equator of the earth. The astrological chart in Vedic astrology is square in shape. The planets on it are aligned to constellations. These charts have whole sign houses, and each house has one and only one sign in it. The ascendant could be anywhere in the First House. On the other hand, modern astrology uses a round chart. The degree of the ascendant is usually placed at the beginning of the First House. The planets used in both systems of astrology is also different. Vedic philosophy in astrology only uses those planets which are visible to us, like Saturn, Jupiter, and Mars. On the other hand, modern astrology use all of the major planets, including Neptune, Pluto, and Uranus. Vedic astrology gets each planet to associate with all other planets in the same house, and only a couple of planets have additional aspects for other planets and for Houses. Western philosophy follows the five aspects laid down by Ptolemy – trine, sextile, square, conjunction, and opposition. Planets are aspects only for other planets or for angles. A major difference between Vedic astrology and Modern astrology is in the treatment of retrograde planets. Vedic astrologers look at how the visible planets are actually seen in the sky, and therefore the retrograde planets appear brighter (since they are passing through their closest point to earth). That is why retrograde planets are considered good. On the other hand, Modern astrology considers retrograde planets to be a bad sign. Vedic astrology has always considered the planet Saturn to be a malefic planet, but not so much in modern astrology. This concept of benefic and malefic planets is seen more in Vedic astrology.
