Hosting a Homestay? London Families’ FAQs

Education
If you’re looking to earn some extra cash and meet interesting people from all over the world, there’s nothing more rewarding than transforming your spare room into a space for a homestay. London living is expensive and with accommodation being one of the most valued commodities in the city, becoming a host for students is a great way to enrich both your family’s daily life and your wallet.

Hosting itself is easy, but you might have few questions when starting out. Read on to find out the answers to the most common queries.

Why Should I Become a Host?

Apart from the obvious incentive – that you can earn some extra cash – being a host is wonderful for many reasons. Not only is it a fun and exciting experience, but welcoming a foreign student into your home is a great way to introduce yourself (and your other family members) to a whole new culture. Pupils come from all over the globe, and while they’re here to learn English, many of them are more than happy to teach you a few phrases of their own language.

Hosting is also extremely simple and can be tailored to suit your preferences. With so many students looking for a something a little more homely than a hotel, you get to decide how whether you would prefer to offer a long or short stay.

What Do I Need to Be a Host?

So you’ve decided to you’d like offer your house as a homestay. London is full of people like you! Hosts come from all walks of life, but they all share an interest in welcoming guests into a warm and welcoming space. This attitude is all you’ll really need – plus these few essentials:

• A suitably sized bedroom furnished with a bed, wardrobe, desk, chair and lamp

• Free internet and TV access

• Access to free laundry facilities

• Access to a living room (this social space is, arguably, the heart of the family)

• A clean, friendly, accommodating atmosphere

• Meals (breakfast and/or dinner) if you are willing to provide them

How Much Can I Earn as a Host?

How much money you can earn depends on a number of factors – what type of room you’re willing to offer, whether you’re taking twin bookings, the location… to name a few!

Location is probably one of the most important factors students consider when choosing their homestay. London is a huge area, packed with exciting things to do and places to explore – many students like to be in amongst the action. Some areas, such as Zone 2, are in higher demand than those further out and will therefore be able to charge a higher fee. Your rate will be confirmed after your assessment has been completed.

Now that all your questions are answered, you’ll no doubt be feeling ready to welcome your new family member! For students looking for a homestay, London is the ideal location, so make your home welcoming and you’ll become the go-to provider.

Author Plate Sophie Smith works as an independent consultant and offers advice to young people looking for London-based student accommodation, whether they prefer Halls of Residence or a private homestay. London has a wide range of options when it comes to student living, and Sophie’s expert tips and tricks never fail to put aspiring residents at ease. Her knowledge stems from her first-hand experience studying in the city and living on a budget, so she is more than qualified to support others doing the same.
