Great Ways to Celebrate Halloween London Style

Education
While it’s not quite as popular here as it is in the USA, Halloween is still an exciting holiday in the UK. In this article, we’ll give some background on holiday traditions and look at some of the best ways to celebrate while living in student accommodation. London is a huge, diverse city, so there’s something for all tastes and price ranges. Read on to learn more.

Traditions

Halloween is certainly one of the more unusual holidays, and can seem strange if you’re new to the country. But don’t worry – most people simply see it as a time to dress up and have fun.

The origins of the celebration are unclear, but it seems to have derived from traditional harvest festivals, celebrating bringing in crops and preparing for winter. This was later adapted by churches, however few religious elements survive today. You may find that some churches do use the opportunity to remember and honour the dead.

Mostly though, it’s a holiday for spooky, playful fun! And, of course, it’s increasingly popular: from shops to student accommodation, London gets fully into the spirit with decorations and treats.

Parties and Dances

As with most other nights in London, you can experience everything from affordable fun to high-end luxury.

• Thriller Night – Hosted by ‘I Love the ‘90s’, this event mixes great classic tunes with horror-themed songs and soundtracks for a unique club night.

• Zombie Apocalypse – As one of the most popular ‘end of the world’ scenarios in fiction, the zombie apocalypse theme offers a lot of opportunities for fun makeup and costumes. Once you’re here, you can dance to a mix of indie and pop music in multiple rooms all decked out for the occasion.

• Halloween Balls – More expensive, but very rewarding if you want to spend the money, these events see high-end venues like the Candlelight Club and the Mansion put on Halloween-themed dances, with live music and even amazing prizes, sometimes in secret locations. If you want a VIP night, this is the event for you.

Special Events

Don’t worry if you’re not into clubs: the city has a diverse range of events to explore, from painting to murder mysteries.

• Tales from the Chamber – If you think waxworks are creepy, Madame Tussaud’s will be a great Halloween attraction. The special pop-up events based on real-life murders will be sure to chill you …

• Pop-Up Painting – If you’re the artistic type, a pop-up painting workshop can be a great way to indulge your creativity while having some spooky fun.

• Murder on the Barts Floor – Hidden bars have become increasingly popular in the city, and you might even have some near your student accommodation – London is full of surprises! One of the best is Barts, which hosts a murder mystery evening themed around 1920s Chicago for the October season. Get some friends together and get ready for a night out with a difference.

Film Nights

Finally, if you want something a little quieter but don’t fancy spending the night in your student accommodation, London has you covered, with a variety of horror classics screening at locations throughout the city. Check out the Prince Charles cinema near Leicester Square for an especially good selection throughout the month.

With so much on offer, you’ll almost be spoilt for choice! Check out the student accommodation in London’s different areas and find the best nearby night out or you.
