3 Unmissable Day Trips from London for Students

Travel & Tourism
Day trips are the perfect opportunity to spend time with your host family if you have opted for a student homestay. London has so many historically rich and interesting cities nearby, so grab your hosts and get to the nearest train station!

Windsor

From charming gardens to historic castles, Windsor has so much more to see than you might expect. Just 20 miles from the centre of the city, it’s quick and easy to get to – take a mainline train from London Paddington to Windsor Central with a changeover at Slough or travel directly from Waterloo to Windsor and Eton Riverside. Why not explore with your host family? They will know all there is to know about travelling around London.

• Windsor Castle: The largest and oldest occupied castle on the planet, Windsor Castle is often the weekend home of the Royal Family. Whether you have an interest in the British monarchy or simply enjoy looking at impressive castles, the State Apartments and St. George’s Chapel are ideal for visitors wanting to uncover more of Britain’s history.

• Savill Garden: With 35 acres of woods, Savill Garden is one of Britain’s most famous ornamental gardens. Home to the Spring Wood, the Hidden Gardens, the New Zealand Garden and many more, Savill Garden is the best location for taking in the peaceful atmosphere that Windsor has to offer.

Oxford

Just an hour or two away from lively London, Oxford is a must-visit city to explore for its quiet cobbled streets and inspiring architecture. While you could pay for a train, if you’ve chosen a student homestay London is only a short drive from Oxford, so there’s no excuse not to give it a visit if your host family are happy to drive!

• University Colleges: Oxford’s famous university has 38 colleges and buildings to explore. Take a tour of Christchurch, admire the stunning chapel at Exeter College or take a stroll through the Trinity College Garden.

• Pubs: Oxford is renowned for its pubs. Finish your day by visiting Eagle & Child, The White Horse or the King’s Arms. The Turf Tavern, one of the oldest pubs in the area, has a charming outdoor beer garden as well as lots of indoor seating.

Brighton

Just over an hour from London on train or by car, Brighton is the perfect day out for you and your host family. With unique shops and a pebble-beach, the city has so much to see.

• The North Laine: North Laine is full of laid-back bars and cafes, with vintage shops and a Saturday street market. Grab some fresh gelato at Gelato Gusto or visit Pelicano for artisan coffee and freshly made sandwiches and salads. For anyone wanting a perfect picture for Instagram, North Laine is the place.

• Brighton Palace Pier: This is definitely the most important place to visit when exploring Brighton. Grab some fish and chips and have fun on the slot-machines and funfair!

Make the most of your time in The Big Smoke and get to know its surrounding cities. If you’ve opted for a student homestay, London has so much for you to discover!
