Renting a Car If you’re feeling brave you can hire a vehicle to drive yourself along the Italian countryside and through the towns you decide to explore. Travelling between the two cities takes about an hour and fifteen minutes, or you can take the scenic La Cassia route (slightly longer) to take in some fabulous views along the way. Public Transport: Buses and Trains If navigating narrow streets and learning a new set of traffic laws isn’t your cup of tea, you might consider taking a train or a bus for your journey from Florence to Siena. Buses Although the bus station in Florence can be a little tricky to find at first, the ‘Rapida’ bus will take you directly between cities in an hour and fifteen minutes, while the slower ‘Ordinaria’ takes an hour and a half. The central square is walking distance from Siena’s Piazza Gramsci, where the bus will drop you off. Trains Trains between the towns provide a little more of a challenge, since Siena is perched on a hill and only accessible by foot or by vehicle. Some trains require a switch at Empoli, while others are direct – on average, a train from Florence to Siena takes between an hour and a half and two hours, and requires a hike up the hill (or a short bus trip) upon arrival. Organised Tours One final option that’s well worth considering is booking on to an organised tour that takes in both cities and several stops in between. An air-conditioned and comfortable coach tour will take you all the way from Florence to Siena in comfort and style.
