Ski seasons are almost upon us and if you’re considering catered chalets, La Plagne is a fabulous option, especially if you’re an advanced skier looking for your next challenge. The huge scale of the full Paradiski ski area is tough to imagine, but believe us, the 425km of downhill pistes that lie between 1200 and 3250m are all ready and waiting for those who decide on this resort this winter. The ski area you see today is relatively new; in 2003 the two areas of Les Arcs and La Plagne were linked by a state of the art lift system. Combining these two resorts has created a ski area that is nothing short of sensational and you can cross from one to the other in a matter of minutes, thanks to the 200-person Vanoise Express cable car. Fact: This cable car was built with minimal impact on the natural beauty of the surrounding area and boasts the world’s longest single span between pylons (1824m). Fun on the Slopes for the More Advanced No matter whether you are staying in hotels, self catered or catered chalets, La Plagne’s slopes are never far away. The resort was purpose built for mountain sports, so lifts are conveniently close to the town centre. Despite being a hub that attracts skiers of all abilities and providing lots of options for beginners, this place also offers challenges for the more competent, as well. Of course, advanced skiing and boarding requires venturing further afield and heading up onto the higher slopes, so you have to make sure that conditions allow, but when they do, a great spot to tackle is the Glacier de la Chiaupe, or the Bellecôte glacier. Up here are a couple of challenging black runs: Le Rochu and the Bellecôte, as well a few others that are definitely worth the trek, especially if there’s fresh snow. With so much to explore between the pistes, this is a great intro to off-piste action. For more adventurous off-piste fun you can always drop off the back of Les Verdons or Grand Rochette. This off-piste is very accessible when the snow is fresh. A huge mogul field greets you at the top of the Traversee chair lift, so if you like a real workout and enjoy that ‘oh so painful’ leg burn, this is the spot for you. The Ski des Bosses (‘ski the moguls’) run is another long leg burner and is always kept in tip top condition. Other black runs include Les Etroits, Morbleu, Les Coqs and Plsembleu that can all be found above Aime La Plagne at Le Biolley 2350m. Les Etroits is the toughest and the longest. If you like a shorter, stepper black run then head to Les Coches, as you will find a couple here that offer lots of fun. There are 16 black runs in this resort and, thanks to its links to the Paradiski area, you have access to a whole lot more as an advanced skier.
