Kodo tickets are now available and can be bought or sold online at StubHub.com. There’s a primal urge within every human to respond to repetitive beats. It’s not clear why—it might have something to do with the repetition of the human heartbeat, or maybe just the social nature of humans dictates the body to follow a group’s movements. But beats have an enormous impact. This is something that Kodo, a Japanese group of taiko drummers, understands all too well. Kodo has been bringing the amazing style of drumming known as taiko to international audiences for years now. Made up of a couple dozen members, the group formed in 1981, bringing the explosive rhythms of the massive taiko drums to stage. The theatricality that goes with them—the drums are bigger than some of the players, and making any sound on them at all requires incredible upper body strength—has made them an attraction and won them many fans. Their music, which sounds tribal and grand, has also piqued the interest of many foreigners, as well as igniting passion for the ancient musical art form in the hearts of Japanese audience members. Kodo’s members spend most of their year performing. About a third is spent practicing and working out extensively to build up the muscle mass necessary to even play the taiko drums. A second third of the year is spent touring domestically, bringing their amazing show to the people of Japan. Finally, the last third of their year is spent abroad, where they introduce the sound of the taiko drums to foreigners and earn (and they definitely earn it) the appreciation for this style of music. The group has performed on every continent except for Antarctica. If there were more people living there, they might be able to cross that one off the list, too. Kodo is entirely dedicated to their music. If you’ve never seen them before, consider getting Kodo tickets today. Written by Andrew Good and sponsored by StubHub.com.
