Steely Dan tickets are now available and can be bought or sold online at StubHub.com. Steely Dan is a band that everyone’s dad seems to have LPs of in those old, dusty vinyl collections of theirs. Many a doobie was smoked over the band’s unique sound, blending artsy jazz with rock, R&B and blues. "Do It Again," probably their best-known hit, was omnipresent on the radio in the ‘70s and ‘80s, and still is heard regularly today. The band formed in 1972 when bassist Walter Becker joined vocalist and keyboardist Donald Fagen, the two of them naming their outfit after a sex toy mentioned in William S. Burroughs’ Naked Lunch. It was not their first musical venture; they had performed together for several years in other bands. They remained constant throughout the history of Steely Dan, though backing musicians would change. Their debut album, Can’t Buy A Thrill, was a critical and commercial smash. But for every song like "Do It Again," there was another, more wildly out-there song waiting in the wings to be unleashed on the mainstream public. This was a relatively pop introduction to a band that would later introduce more and more instrumental jazz songs and bizarre lyrics. The band scored numerous hits over the years, most notably "Do It Again" and "Rikki Don’t Lose that Number." Aja, their 1977 release, would become a Top 10 hit, probably their most successfully selling album in the entire Steely Dan discography. With jazzy bass riffs and soft vocals, the band’s songs were analyzed at great length by Steely Dan fans. The band acquired a kind of cult status, which only grew with time. In 1980, Becker and Fagen released what would be their final Steely Dan record in a long time, Gaucho. The record was, like most of its predecessors, a commercial and critical hit. They wouldn’t record together as Steely Dan until 1995, when they released the poorly received Alive in America. But Dan fans didn’t have long to wait for better work. Steely Dan tickets are still available, and the band is still impressing their fans. Written by Andrew Good and sponsored by StubHub.com.
