Located in central Austria, Salzburg lies in a picturesque and unspoilt region where traditional wooden built villages nestle alongside mountain lakes and superb alpine scenery. The city of Salzburg itself provides many offerings but for a truly different trip, then take to the lakes that lie within easy reach of the city centre and indulge in some Austrian sailing in a truly splendid setting. The Salzburg Lake District (Salzkammergut) is a great place to start; its crystal clear waters and lakeside beaches make it an idyllic setting for boating and sailing as well as all round rejuvenation and relaxation. Lake Fuschl (Fuschlsee) is the first Austrian stretch of water you will reach upon entering the Lake District and is renowned as being the clearest and cleanest of all the lakes, offering drinking quality water to bathe in coupled with untouched beaches to unwind on. Another popular stop is Lake Wolfgang (Wolfgangsee), a reminder of Salzburg’s highly acclaimed musical composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The village of St. Wolfgang makes a pleasant stop for a slice of famous Sacher torte (chocolate cake) and cup of coffee. The lakes of Wallersee and Mattsee are home to sailing schools so even if you’ve never sailed before you could try your hand at taking the helm. Wallersee is also host to an autumn music festival which is held in Neumarkt and is a definite highlight of the area. If water is your fancy you will also be pleased by the river boat rides available in Salzburg city centre. The city is built along the rivers banks so you can sit back and enjoy an alternative view of the onion-domed churches, medieval turrets and ancient spires which fuse together to create a stunning skyline. Salzburg’s baroque centre is a classified UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site and it’s easy to see why; the Prince-archbishops who ruled ancient Salzburg built so many grand churches, palaces, mansions and gardens that the city was soon dubbed the Rome of the North. Gothic and renaissance, as well as baroque aspects of the city make it an aesthetic treat, all perfectly accompanied with cobbled streets and winding alleyways to fan your interest. An array of other architectural delights, from cathedrals to catacombs, gardens and fortresses, mean there are endless sights to explore whether by boat, on foot or by horse drawn carriage. During July and August, music lovers are in for a treat if visiting Salzburg as the summer festival commences and hundreds of events, including operas, theatre performances and concerts, take place in any available space. The summer months do tend to be busier as the city makes a popular tourist attraction, so bear this in mind when organising your flights to Salzburg and make your booking in plenty of time so you don’t miss out on some of the best months in Austria.
