Phish tickets can be bought or sold online at StubHub.com. Throughout the ‘90s, Phish developed a solid reputation among college-age listeners for their bizarre take on folk. Fans fully embraced their weird sense of humor, which the band often brought to their live shows (anyone able to appreciate a musician playing a vacuum player has a healthy sense of the absurd). The band’s music was often compared to the Grateful Dead, whose folk-rock and pop blend made them infamous in the ‘60s. Phish formed in 1983 in Burlington, VT, and initially consisted of guitarist and vocalist Trey Anastasio, drummer Jon Fishman and guitarist Jeff Holdsworth. Bassist Mike Gordon was added soon after, and the group began playing at gigs on campus at the University of Vermont. By the next year, Phish tickets were being sold off-campus, and had added to their merry band of music makers: Percussionist Marc Daubert joined them, and their shows sometimes also featured a mysterious singer/songwriter known only as "The Dude of Life." Page McConnell became their keyboardist, though at that time they lost Holdsworth. They released their debut album, Junta, in 1988, immediately starting a buzz among those who heard it. By 1991, when they released A Picture of Nectar, it became their breakthrough album, giving them wide exposure and earning a reputation among fans as a classic Phish album that holds true today. The band developed a truly unique relationship with its fans. Much as the Grateful Dead were aware of and encouraged bootlegs to be made of their live shows, Phish encouraged fans to record their live shows. In 1993, they sold special tickets to shows for fans that planned to videotape them live. By the mid-‘90s, the band’s videos were showing up regularly on MTV, and by the late ‘90s they had become a veritable college rock institution due to their relentless touring schedule. The passion they had for their audiences had paid off in a big way. In 2000, the members took a well-deserved break. Fans were tided over the next three years as 20 volumes of live concert recordings were released. Written by Andrew Good and sponsored by StubHub.
