Washed over in the fog of feedback and reverb, it’s easy to see why the term "shoegaze" came to define the band’s sound—it’s hard to do anything but lose yourself in the noise enveloping you, float away on the ethereal vocals and, yes, stare at your shoes. The band has become a legend among listeners of indie-rock, largely due to the fact that they had such a brief career, culminating with a landmark album that kicked off the ‘90s—and then nothing. The band returned to the studio to work on a third album that never appeared. Rumors were spun that astronomical cost overruns had prevented the band from gaining any traction. Thankfully for fans, they’re back on tour, even recently hosting All Tomorrow’s Parties in New York. My Bloody Valentine tickets are sure to be snapped up by those expecting the band to fall silent again after this. The band in its earliest incarnations was considered a run-of-the-mill goth band, emerging out of Ireland in the mid-‘80s with a few EPs and a debut album, This is Your Bloody Valentine, and named after an ‘80s slasher flick. After some restructuring, the band’s lineup would include vocalist, guitarist and songwriter Kevin Shields, drummer Colm O’Ciosoig, bassist Debbie Googe and vocalist and guitarist Belinda Butcher. Their debut album, 1988’s Isn’t Anything, introduced the world to their unique sound. It was a tumultuous sea, with the crash of charging rock in some songs and placid, almost sublimely calm and mysterious moments elsewhere. It earned them a lot of attention, but their follow-up, 1991’s Loveless, was already being hailed as a masterwork, and is still remembered as one of the best albums of the decade. After that, all is left to rumor. Shields’ perfectionism always made it hard for albums to be completed, and there were rumors that he had completed two albums but scrapped them. The estimated $458,000 cost bankrupt their label, effectively crippling the band’s career. But according to sparsely given interviews with Shields, there is material available from those recording sessions, and he has plans to finally release a third record.
