As rock became more cerebral and spacey throughout the age of prog (otherwise known as the ‘70s), AC/DC reacted violently, creating hard-edged rock that harked back to the days when loud was good. Even today, they’re considered a staple of any rock-devouring music fan, and their classic albums, like 1979’s Highway to Hell and 1980’s Back in Black are still considered influential. Curiously enough, the band was formed in 1973 from the remnants of the Velvet Underground. No, not that Velvet Underground—an Australian band of the same name founded by guitarist Malcolm Young. He brought on his younger and extremely colorful younger brother Angus as a lead guitarist, performing where they could. Angus, being a teenager at the time, still had a school uniform. It was suggested he should wear the uniform to shows, and the visual icon stuck. Within a year drummer Phil Rudd, bassist Mark Evans and the band’s driver-turned-vocalist, the wild and unpredictable Bon Scott, joined the band. It didn’t take long for them to gain a reputation for out of control hard rock that got people at their shows fired up. In 1975, AC/DC released its debut, TNT, following it up with 1976’s High Voltage. Together, the hits on these two albums would pave the way for their American, and eventually international, success. 1976’s Dirty Deeds Done Cheap was another accomplishment for the band, and is still critically hailed today. Evans left the band in 1977, and was replaced by Chris Williams. Let There Be Rock and Powerage were both released, making them an American presence, but it was Highway to Hell and its follow-up, the amazing Back in Black, that made them superstars. For Those About to Rock We Salute You shot to the top of the charts, but the band’s popularity declined throughout the ‘80s (picking up slightly with the release of 1990’s The Razor’s Edge, which included "Thunderstruck." Today, AC/DC are still considered legends of rock, and hardcore fans snap up AC/DC tickets like there’s no tomorrow. Don’t be left out in the dust when their tour comes by you!
