Radio Golf tickets can be bought or sold online at StubHub.com. If you’re looking for drama and it’s an election year, you won’t have to look far to find it. But in a presidential campaign that has included the issue of race and forgotten secrets or facts candidates would prefer left in the dark, Radio Golf seems a very appropriate play for our times. Curiously enough, it’s set in the late 1990s, in Pittsburgh, where a wealthy African-American who had done well for himself decides he can turn his financial success into a political one by running for mayor. If he were to win, he would be Pittsburgh’s first black mayor, and the weight of this step forward for the city’s black population is not lost on him—but the candidate may also be taking a step back. Written by celebrated playwright August Wilson, Radio Golf examines race as something inescapable, though there are many who try to escape their heritage by assimilating themselves into a material culture. Wilson’s perspective seems to suggest that no degree of financial or political success can tear you from the roots you sprang from. His play includes characters that both are struggling to maintain or deny their racial background in an environment that wants them to be more "white." Other characters act as voices from the past, decrying the trend toward shedding the rich cultural history of black America for one that Wilson clearly perceives is a glossy air of respectability that doesn’t necessarily penetrate the surface of the person. Wilson worked for 25 years on a cycle of 10 plays that focused on the issue of the black experience. They ranged in time frame, and weren’t always written in chronological order. Radio Golf was Wilson’s final play in the cycle—and his final play ever, as he passed away in 2005 without writing another. Radio Golf tickets are a great investment for anyone interested in further exploring the myths and potential future of black America. Written by Andrew Good and sponsored by StubHub.
