Metallica tickets can be bought or sold online at StubHub.com. Throughout the ‘80s, one name defined metal and has continued to do so until today. Shot to the top of the charts almost solely based on grassroots support from their fans, Metallica is now one of, if not the, most successful metal band performing. Their fifth studio album, Death Magnetic, has risen to the top of the charts, selling 490,000 units in just three days. Their last album, 2003’s St. Anger, sold 418,000 units in a similar frame of time, while their biggest selling album to date was 1996’s Load, which sold 618,000 units in its opening frame. The band has come far, with Metallica tickets selling out at many of their tour dates nowadays. But it’s been a tough climb to the top. Metallica was formed in 1981 in Los Angeles, consisting originally of James Hetfield (vocalist), Kirk Hammett (guitarist), Lars Ulrich (drummer) and Cliff Burton (bassist). The band’s 1983 debut, Kill ‘em All, announced the arrival of not just a new band, but a new genre, virtually giving birth to thrash by blending together the elements of metal that Judas Priest and Iron Maiden pioneered while fusing it with a rabid, adrenaline rush. 1984’s Ride the Lightening proved to be a highly successful follow-up, showing the band capable of experimentation and expanding their sound into new directions in only a short year. But it was 1986’s Master of Puppets that put them on the map. That album lifted them out of just the hardcore metal audience—which is often ghettoized by mainstream music listeners—and expanded the band’s reach into the Top 30 crowd. Naturally, this didn’t just bring Metallica to the rest of America, but brought much of America to metal. Despite the fact that the band would lose Cliff Burton in a tragic tour bus accident, they would decide to march on with new member Jason Newsted in his place. The band has since become the ultimate metal band. Written by Andrew Good and sponsored by StubHub.
