In the early ‘90s, chunky black-rimmed glasses made Rivers Cuomo a nerd-fangirl’s dreamboat, and made vest-wearing, emo-loving males feel comfortable with their own prescription eyewear. But Cuomo and company has done far more to identify themselves as "nerd-friendly," something that has endeared them to their fans over the years. Weezer’s 1994 self-titled debut attracted a lot of attention in the music press. It was known to fans as The Blue Album due to its turquoise cover; future records bearing primary color covers would become a staple of the band, which later released a green and red album, as well. This gimmick, combined with the fact that Cuomo was a Harvard student, earned them ink. But it was their geeky perspective on love and life that kept Weezer tickets selling through the ‘90s and beyond. On songs like "In the Garage," lonely teens—or former lonely teens—could relate to the feeling of being safe in your rec room, listening to KISS and playing D&D with friends. "Buddy Holly," undeniably one of their biggest hits, had some lyrics that touched a nerve for people who never felt like they fit into the male or female molds they saw reflected back at them from magazine covers. It was much easier for Weezer’s listeners to identify with the awkward rocker Buddy Holly or the imperfect but always chipper go-getter Mary Tyler Moore. The video for the song, poking fun at Happy Days, had an ironic bent to it that appealed to the ‘90s alt-rock listeners. With pop-culture references peppering their songs in subsequent albums, Cuomo and company earned a steady following among the nerd crowd. They continue to establish their geek cred today; 2008’s single "Pork and Beans" was popularized by a video released on YouTube spoofing Internet memes and celebrities. Including many of the Internet celebrities they were spoofing, the band found a new audience in younger music fans who are enamored with the online world.
