When the Ramones first hit the stage, no one expected those three bowl-cut-wearing youths playing amateurishly fast and loud music would change rock as we knew it. Their lyrics sounded brain-dead, and their music was pure adrenaline. In time, the sound would become harder, and the lyrics more provocative. The band’s that rose up in the initial wake of punk blended modern anger with the sense of injustice that the protest singers of the ‘60s shared (though they have bristled at the comparison). Flash forward to the ‘00s, when punk has been contorted into every shape the music market could bend it in order to make a dollar. Forming in 1997, and largely the personal project of vocalist Tom Gabel, Against Me! has made a name for itself by returning to the hard-edged, bristling anger of those early post-punk bands. Gabel began performing under the name Against Me! at the tender age of 17, playing in Laundromats and small venues—wherever his voice could be heard and there were people to listen. Though it’s a term that’s been twisted out of recognition, if punk were to be defined in music, there’s probably no more apt description than that of giving a voice to those who didn’t have one before—usually the young. Gabel took this to heart, writing songs that both made you want to pump your fist in the air as well as write a song yourself. With Gabel at the helm, and guitarist James Bowman, drummer Warren Oakes and bassist Andrew Seward, in tow, the band’s most recent album, 2007’s New Wave, the band encapsulates the passion and impatience of youth that’s burning to get out into the world and create its own noise. On the title track Gable sings: "We can control the medium/We can control the context of presentation/Is there anybody on the receiving end?/Reaching out for some kind of connection?" With the way Gabel encourages his listeners, it’s no wonder that so many end up buying Against Me! tickets for inspiration. Written by Andrew Good and sponsored by StubHub.
