They don’t call him the king for nothing, after all. B.B. King tickets are back on sale, and King is touring around the country, meaning blues fans are planning some trips to local venues. Riley B. King was born in 1925 in Itta Bena, on the Mississippi Delta. Born into a single-parent home, he spent time between living with his mother and stays with his grandmother, working in the fields when he was older as a sharecropper. The blues would come naturally to him later in life, as his upbringing gave him an intrinsic understanding of the musical style. In 1946, King moved to Memphis, spending most of the next year with his cousin, Bukka White, who taught him the ins and outs of the blues. He would briefly move home and then return to set out on his own, developing his own style for the blues and quickly finding a place for it on the local radio. King became a radio DJ, and soon earned the title of "Beale Street Blues Boy." People shortened that to "Blues Boy," and soon enough, to just plain "B.B." A piece of folklore about B.B. is the naming of his guitar, Lucille. While at a club one night, it’s said two men got into a fight over a woman, knocking over a kerosene- filled pail. The kerosene started a fire that forced everyone to flee; B.B. got out, then dashed back in for his guitar, almost losing his life in the smoke and flames. When he emerged, he learned the name of the woman the men had been fighting over. It was, of course, Lucille. Throughout the ‘50s and ‘60s, B.B. King established himself as one of the finest blues guitarists around. Today, his talent isn’t just impressive—it’s legendary. Make sure you get a taste of it by seeing him live.
