There’s nothing like catching a good wave and enjoying some fun in the sun while great tunes are playing on your radio. For half a century, the Beach Boys have been setting that experience to music. But they’ve become more than that, too. Though they started as the quintessential surf party band, they evolved into an American pop band only rivaled by the Beatles in their popularity. The group’s heart was the Wilson brothers, a trio that grew up in Hawthorne, CA, not far from the ocean and with a deep love for music. Brian Wilson, now a pop music institution, was the real aficionado, listening to ‘50s groups and dreaming about one day bringing his own lyrics and songcraft to the stage. They would harmonize together, and in 1961, formed a band with Brian on bass, Carl Wilson on guitar and Dennis Wilson on drums. Their cousin, Mike Love, and Brian’s friend, Al Jardine, eventually joined in. Their first hit, "Surfin’," was considered a strong song that even saw some action on the charts. It earned the band a contract, and though Jardine left (and was replaced by friend David Marks), the group as a whole was going places. They released their debut album, Surfin’ Safari, in 1962. The title track helped create the myth of the Southern California beach lifestyle, and kicked off a fascination with the subculture that would become huge throughout the ‘60s. In time, songs like "Catch a Wave," "I Get Around" and "Help Me Rhonda" would establish he band as one of the finest pop groups of the ‘60s, and certainly at the top of the heap when it came to the surf band culture. Brian Wilson was an especially large part of their success, writing hit after hit and spending hours in the studio, helping the band achieve the fame they earned. Sadly, a deep rift would divide the band. Wilson fell in with the counter-culture, experimenting with drugs and employing often cryptic, poetic lyrics. The band just wanted to stick with surf rock; Wilson was ready for the coming psychedelic movement. Their releases throughout the late ‘60s would see their popularity decline. Now, the band is back, and you can hear your favorite songs live. Make sure you get Beach Boys tickets before they sell out! This article was written by Andrew Good and sponsored by StubHub.
