David Byrne tickets are now available to buy or sell online at StubHub.com. By his own admission, David Byrne has his fingers in a lot of pies. As musician, as artist, as indie rock elder statesman, Byrne is regarded highly and continues to be an influence in pop culture. He has legions of fans that analyze, dissect, and enjoy his music, and in New York has been somewhat high profile for his public art works. Let’s look over some of the many ways Byrne has become an influential pop cultural icon. Music: David Byrne’s music includes his work as vocalist, songwriter and frontman for The Talking Heads, a long and eclectic body of solo work, and two records of collaborations with electronic music pioneer and infamous producer Brian Eno. A new record is out now from the both of them, as a matter of fact, and David Byrne tickets are selling fast. But once the tour is over, people will still hold Bryne’s music up as intelligent and catchy indie-rock. Some of the best known songs—"Psycho Killer" and "Once In a Lifetime" among others—are still ubiquitous on the radio today. At times jangly post-punk, funky dance grooves, experimental rock or electronic have all played a role in Byrne’s music. He’s sure to continue pushing the envelope in the future. Film and television: David Byrne’s experiences with cinema are somewhat more limited than that of music. The most obvious film he was involved in was Stop Making Sense, a concert film documenting a Talking Heads tour. Also notable is True Stories, a movie directed and largely written by Byrne about a cast of bizarre characters in a small Texas town. Most of the vignettes in the piece were inspired by odd stories Byrne read in newspapers. Byrne has also composed music for a handful of film and television productions, with 1987’s Academy Award-winning The Last Emperor and HBO’s Big Love being the best known among them. Artist: David Byrne attended the Rhode Island School of Design, and his artistic background definitely had a larger role in influencing his music. But it’s also informed his other artistic pursuits. Most recently, he was courted by the city of New York to create several public bike racks, with each designed around the neighborhood it was placed in (e.g. around Wall Street the rack is shaped like a dollar sign). He’s also quite famously hosted several exhibitions of warehouse-sized buildings that were converted into musical instruments. Using a central control system, visitors could "play" the building by conducting air through pipes, send charges humming through walls, and create noises from the general stresses and tensions the building undergoes. Elder statesman: This is a bit of an odd title, but Byrne’s reputation for being a pioneer precedes him. He’s often sought out for interviews these days, seeking comment on his own extensive and eclectic body of work as well as the changing landscape of music. He’s looked to as an influence and an icon, and his peaceful, even shy demeanor lends itself well to inspiring other artists. This article was written by Andrew Good and sponsored by StubHub.
