The opera opens with J. Robert Oppenheimer and his fellow scientists in the final few hours before the first atomic bomb test, discussing the moral choices that are being made if the bomb is dropped on Japan. The set is designed to reflect the Arizona desert, dry, empty, silent—God’s country, which the scientists seem to be trespassing on. At the time of the bomb’s development, there was more than just the moral ramifications of attacking a hostile country with it. No one was really sure what would happen once the bomb went off. There was even some speculation that the bomb would ignite the Earth’s atmosphere, setting the sky ablaze. It truly was playing in the realm of God, and the scientists in question worried that the atom bomb could destroy the entire world before any other country even had it. The characters in the story are based on real scientists who developed the bomb and wrestled with the ethical implications of doing so. J. Robert Oppenheimer, the director of the project, takes a central role in this story, as does his wife and the wives of several other scientists. They in particular seem to understand that their husbands’ research has an impact that will affect far more than just the outcome of the war. It will affect foreign policy and wars to come. New York’s opera fans have a lot to choose from when they decide what they want to see each season.
