Though Beverly Hills Chihuahua dominated the box office weekend for Oct. 3 to Oct. 5, TV on the Radio fans were turning their attention to a quiet little drama that ranked 27th on the box office charts. Rachel Getting Married, directed by Academy Award-winner Jonathan Demme (Silence of the Lambs, Philadelphia, Stop Making Sense), premiered and drew reams of praise from critics. Sadly, a film about a young woman recovering from heroin addiction and attending a family function doesn’t always go over easily with American audiences. But music lovers had another reason for checking out this flick. The cast, which includes Anne Hathaway and Debra Winger, also includes TV on the Radio vocalist Tunde Adebimpe, who has had a brief but critically acclaimed acting career. In the film, Adebimpe plays a wedding guest who, at one point, shows off his vocal skills by belting out the lyrics to Neil Young’s "Unknown Legend" off Harvest Moon. Adebimpe’s cover of the song also appears on the Rachel Getting Married soundtrack. For many, this will be the first time seeing the singer in the context of film. Most fans know him as an indie-rock frontman with emotive, even poetic lyrics and an energetic live performer. But TV on the Radio fans should know he’s capable of more than just the fantastic music that the band has produced. Adebimpe’s film experience begins in 1998, with a short film called Jorge. The 30-minute movie was eventually lengthened to 97 minutes for Jump Tomorrow, which received a limited release at art houses across the country in 2001. In it, Adebimpe plays the lead character, an introverted, slightly awkward Nigerian man wandering across the American landscape, and finding love and adventure along the way. He’s on his way to an arranged marriage, which depresses him—but life seems to have more in store for his character. Don’t just settle for TV on the Radio tickets. Make sure you see all the creative talent this performer is capable of. This article was written by Andrew Good and sponsored by StubHub.
