Recently, I read a story about a real estate investor that was using his rollover Roth IRA for some of his more lucrative deals. The tax-sheltered nature of the account is perfect for real estate investments, but the typical traditional custodial company does not offer or even allow the option. That’s a shame. By keeping their clients “stuck” in the stock market, they have inhibited them from earning to their fullest potential. They have actually made it impossible for some people to retire. If you choose the right self-directed custodian, they will allow you to invest in anything that is allowed under the tax code. You can still keep some stocks, if you want, but it is a volatile market, to say the least. You might not think that real estate is that much better, but let me tell you a few things about that. A person that has invested in “real” property (houses, land, office buildings, etc.) has something that is of “real” value. Cash is only worth what it can buy. The value of stock is dependent on how well the company manages its business. The value of cars and other personal property depreciates over time.
