If you’re considering breast augmentation, you’re not alone. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, breast augmentation was the second most popular cosmetic surgery in 2007, with 399,400 procedures done. That gives you lots of company. You’re also not alone if you’re worried about a scar after the surgery. The good news is that although a scar is inevitable after the incision heals, the incision location is discreet, making the scar virtually invisible. Choosing your incision location is part of the preparation for breast augmentation. What causes scarring? The body forms scars as part of its healing whenever the skin is cut. Extra collagen, a fibrous protein, replaces the damaged cells and connect the skin’s edges. Scarring is affected by: • The length and depth of your incision • The location of your incision • Your age • Your heredity and ethnicity Choices for Incision Location All locations are designed to make the resulting scar as invisible as possible. • Underneath the breast in the crease, where the breasts will cover it. • Around the areola, where the change in skin texture and color will camouflage any scar. • In the armpit (transaxillary incision) where only a sleeveless shirt and raised arms will expose it. • In the navel (transumbilical incision) – this one is not offered by all cosmetic surgeons because of the increased distance from the implant placement site. It’s advantage is that it avoids any scars on or near the breasts. Reducing the risk of scarring It’s important for you and your surgeon to discuss scarring before your procedure. You’ll want to be well-informed of the incision location options and consequences in your particular case. In addition, you can: • Leave the surgical tape in place over the incision for as long as possible. • Refrain from smoking for several weeks before and after your surgery, since tobacco reduces your body’s ability to heal. All reputable surgeons will request this of you if you are a smoker. • Ask your doctor to recommend over-the-counter creams or gels or to prescribe one with known effectiveness.
