One of my readers recently asked me this question; can collagen be absorbed into the skin? I have actually covered that in other articles, but since she asked, I thought that other readers might have missed it, too. So, here’s a quick explanation. Collagens, along with soft keratins, are responsible for the skin’s strength and elasticity. Collagen-fibers, which help to make up the skin’s fibrous matrix, are formed when the skin’s cells secrete pro-collagens. Those pro-collagens combine with amino acids, present in the synapses between the skin’s cells, to form tropo-collagen molecules. Multiple tropo-collagen molecules combine to form fibrils and multiple fibrils combine to form fibers. Collagens are long chains of amino acids, which are referred to as proteins. Shorter chains are called peptides. Individual molecules are amino acids. So, what do you think, can collagen be absorbed into the skin? It certainly could not be absorbed by the skin’s cells, because the amino acid chains are too long. Those chains would not combine with pro-collagens, because, again, they are much too long. If the process did, somehow, occur, the fibers would be mutated or abnormal. New skin cell production slows down with age. Fewer cells mean less pro-collagen production, which of course means less fiber production. If you can stimulate the production of new cells, you will stimulate the production of new fibers. There is one compound that has been shown, in clinical studies, to stimulate the production of new cells by as much as 160% in as little as three days. It’s called CYNERGY TK. It contains a combination of copper and zinc bound to proteins. It is a naturally occurring substance extracted from sheep’s wool. In addition to asking can collagen be absorbed into the skin, you might also ask if it has been shown to stimulate the production of new cells. The answer to that question is “no”. In fact topically applied creams containing collagens have never been shown to do anything, except cause prolonged redness in many people. In the injectable form, it simply fattens up the underlying tissues, stretching out wrinkles and fine lines. The injections are also used to plump lips. Cosmetic companies mislead their customers by implying that their creams can provide similar effects, which, in fact, they cannot. Here’s another question. Can collagen be absorbed into the skin, if it is sourced from fish or other marine animals? No, but it could provide some benefit, depending on the vitamins and minerals that the substance also contained. Marine animals, as well as kelp, algae and seaweed, are usually rich in sodium, potassium, omega-3 fatty acids and B vitamins, all of which are necessary to maintain the skin’s moisture content and balance. Certain kinds of kelp, wakame in particular, have been shown to help prevent damage from UV radiation from the sun and protect levels of an important complex called hyaluronic acid. But, collagens from marine animals are not likely to contain the same nutrients. That should answer; can collagen be absorbed into the skin. Forget about it and look for CYNERGY TK.
