The latest trans dermal collagen gel remedy is said to regenerate collagen fibers, improve moisture retention, soften, slow down the aging process, smooth, reduce scars and “eliminate” wrinkles. Those are bold claims, particularly since there is no clinical research to back them up. There is a cream, with a variety of unique ingredients that is clinically proven to stimulate skin cell production, to improve moisture retention, firmness, moisture content and reduce inflammation and redness, while acting as an effective antioxidant to prevent and repair free radical damage. Let’s look at some of the details of both products. First of all, a trans dermal collagen gel remedy could not possibly “regenerate” collagen fibers. The body can “synthesize” those fibers. Regeneration is not the correct terminology to use. But, supposing that the company means that their products increase the production of those fibers, which normally decreases with age. The question is how? The fibers are composed of numerous bundles of tropo-collagen fibrils. The fibrils are composed of amino acids bound to pro-collagen molecules that are secreted by new cells. It is possible (although doubtful) that the amino acid complexes present in salmon skin are similar enough to those in human skin to bind to the pro-collagens, but, there’s another problem. Not only does collagen-fiber production decrease with age, so does the production of new skin cells. It is the cells that secrete the pro-collagen molecules that begin the process of fiber synthesis. Does a trans dermal collagen gel remedy stimulate the production of new cells? There is no reason to think so. Even the idea of collagens penetrating the skin’s cells is rather difficult to believe, since the long-chains of amino acids that they contain are too large. Short chains of amino acids, typically referred to as peptides, could penetrate and it is these short chains that have been shown, in clinical studies, to increase the number of new cells present in the skin, by as much as 160%...in only three days. They have also been shown to improve moisture retention by 14% and elasticity by 42% over 18 days. After one application, they increase the skin’s moisture content by over 25%. Of course, there are many creams on the market that contain peptide complexes. These results were seen when using a patented peptide complex called CYNERGY TK. Until the introduction of CYNERGY TK, the most effective moisturizer was glycerin, which increased moisture by only 5%. The trans dermal collagen gel remedy is not a moisturizer. The company that makes the salmon version suggests that you follow up with a moisturizing cream. If you used CYNERGY TK, you wouldn’t need an additional moisturizer. The claim of wrinkle “elimination” is too bold to be believable. There are many natural ingredients that help fade wrinkles and if you increase the skin’s firmness, you will start to see fine lines disappear.
