Gout in the Joint of the Knee, Toe, Finger and Other Common Sites

Health

Gout is a type of arthritis disorder that inflames the joint causing pain, swelling and decreased mobility. Gout normally occurs in midlife and particularly in males.

The main cause of gout is the accumulation of uric acid in the body. Where there’s too much secretion of uric acid, kidney failure in excreting enough uric acid, or some other metabolic disorders in the body, uric acid will accumulate and form uric acid crystals in various part of the body. These crystals are the primary cause of the inflammation in gouty arthritis disorder.

The first gout signs usually present at the level of the big toe. The skin around the affected areas becomes yellowed, strained and stained. The areas affected by gout begin to be very sensitive. It even causes the sufferers can’t tolerate clothing or shoes.

In addition to the site of the toes, gout attacks may cause pain and inflammation of the knees, elbows, shoulders, wrists and fingers too.

The primary symptoms of gout are inflammation, extreme pain and swelling in the affected joints. For most of the time, the pain attacks get worsen during the night causing sleep problems to many gout patients. Gout pain may last anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours and in some cases, even days.

Other common gout symptoms include fever, discomfort, sourness, itching and body aches. Gouty arthritis may also lead to back pain since it affects the joints.

The most common site of gout attacks is the joints of the lower body parts like the toes, heels, ankles and knees. But, gout may affect and inflame the upper body include the elbows, spine, shoulders, fingers and hand wrists. Tendons and muscles can also be affected by gout, causing swelling and decreasing of their flexibility and elasticity.

Risk factor of gout attacks:

Genetic
Most cases of gout occur due to genetic predisposition to the disease such as genetically acquired renal dysfunctions or abnormal uric acid levels.

Age and gender
Gout usually attacks middle age and elderly people, not often happening in young people or children. Although gout has the greatest incident in men, it can attack women as well, especially women at more advanced stages of life, particularly after menopause.

Lifestyle
Inappropriate diet, sedentary lifestyle and obesity may multiply the risk of developing gout. Gout happens mostly in people who intake a lot of foods rich in purine. Being overweight increase the secretion of uric acid and the risks of injury in the joint. Smoking and high intake of alcohol and caffeine also influence the secretion of uric acid, contributing to the accumulation of uric acid within the body.

Physiological abnormalities
Other reasons that may contribute to the development of gout are severe anemia, abnormal activity of the enzymes that regulate purine synthesis, prolong intake of certain medications, previous surgeries, abnormal kidney function, the presence of certain diseases that affect blood circulation and medical treatments such as chemotherapy.
