Where is dentistry or oral health heading? Do you think we need one of those fancy GPS options just in case? Males still dominate this profession and as we know, men never stop to ask for directions. It‘s just the nature of the beast. However female dentists are right on their helm as both sexes tack around the anatomical markers in the oral cavity with new skills and agents that reduce, if not completely eliminate the stress and fear of the dental needle. Let me introduce the latest word in dentistry. Sedation or D.O.C.S: has taken off like the new LCD plasma wide-screen TV’s. New graduates of course are up to speed with these new pharmacological interventions, but many grads prior to 1992, for fear of being left behind are booking didactic courses to stay current with the management of fear and pain associated with a dental appointment and local anesthetics. According to Dr. Ziv, an active member of D.O.C.S., the Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation oral conscious sedation in dentistry is an amazing yet simple technique that allows patients to snooze through their entire cosmetic dentistry appointment. Sedation dentistry helps patients feel relaxed and stress free, since it significantly decreases the body's inclination to tense the muscles when under stress. Sedation dentistry techniques require no I.V’s, you simply take a little blue pill, fall asleep and will probably not even remember coming into our office. There are no after effects of the medicine and oral conscious sedation dentistry does not cause the possible side effects of general anesthesia. However, speaking in the vernacular, for those 15 % of patients who fail to acquire deep bone freezing from local anesthetics, and their dentists are beginning to panic over the increase of “no-shows”; which no doubt, cast a dark shadow on some dental clinics in these uncertain times; there is an old saying which goes like this; “Sometimes it's hard to remember that the plan was to drain the swamp when you're up to your knees in alligators”. Sedation dentistry is a perfect solution for patients who exhibit anxiety or dental phobias during appointments or have difficulty controlling movements during dental procedures. Some forms of sedation dentistry simply alleviate anxiety or put patients in a sleep-like state, so that little is felt or remembered from the dentistry procedure. At the Ziv Studio for Smile Design, and many other dentists throughout developed countries now provide sedation dentistry options to ease the fears of anxious patients so that they can receive the treatment they need to keep their smile healthy and beautiful. Sedation Dentistry Information There are several types and degrees of dental sedation; the sedation dentistry technique recommended by your dentist will be based upon the treatment being performed and/or the level of your dental anxiety. During your initial consultation dentists will be able to determine what dental sedation method will be the best for your dental procedure, moderate sedation with oral sedatives or nitrous oxide. - Oral Conscious Sedation
- Nitrous Oxide Treatment
Oral conscious sedation Feeling apprehensive or even outright scared of receiving dental care is nothing to be embarrassed about. In fact, it is a common fear: Millions of people experience anxiety at the thought of visiting the dentist, including many of our patients from the Agoura Hills, Westlake Village, Thousand Oaks, Malibu, and greater Los Angeles areas of California. Sedation dentistry is changing these patients' experiences in the dentist's chair, since it allows them to feel completely at ease during treatment. This allows people who have avoided seeking necessary dental care to receive the treatment they need, without undue fear or discomfort, often leaving our office with little memory of their cosmetic dental procedure, and quickly return to work or school as usual. Just imagine taking a small pill before your dental appointment, dozing away the afternoon, and waking up to a gorgeous new smile! Nitrous Oxide Treatment Some dental offices also provide nitrous oxide treatment as an alternative to oral sedation. For our patients who do not want full sedation dentistry, but still want something to help them relax, nitrous oxide treatment is often an excellent choice. The nitrous gas acts quickly, and helps to take the edge off a patient's anxiety. Many patients who undergo nitrous treatment fall asleep during treatment. In one of my earlier articles I cautioned through a simile; whether G.P dentists will be heading for higher ground after the accurate advice of the weather conditions and forecast of an impending class 5 hurricane? Or weather they will stay behind to look after those few who are determine to ride out the storm regardless of the aftermath. The training in conscious sedation for the average dentist is synonymous, with moving their clinical knowledge to higher grounds so as to avoid the fury of a recession. Whether by design or out of necessity, my bet is that dentistry is at the gates of a recession proof career now that the armamentarium and skills are so well entrenched. Future appointments to your dentist will be like a visit to your massage parlor. Complements in parts to Smile Studio. Dr. Ziv. Comments to localanesthetics@yahoo.ca M.Sc. PharmD.
