As yet, no one seems to have a clear understanding of the dangers of parabens. People ask, “Are parabens bad?” But, it is hard to give them a real answer. Basically, the answer is “maybe”. They are used to preserve ingredients in everything from skincare products to foodstuff. They are created with the use of a petroleum based alcohol like ethyl or methyl. In the initial study, researchers found that some of the breast cancer tumors they evaluated had parabens in them. Whether or not that was the cause of the tumor is unknown, but the preservatives do have some estrogenic activity. Many breast and endometrial cancers are called “estrogen-sensitive”. Meaning that exposure to estrogens causes the cancer to grow. So, one of the dangers of parabens is that they “may” affect estrogen-sensitive cancers, causing them to grow. Those companies that want to continue to use artificial preservatives in their products say that “no” is the answer to; are parabens bad. They say that artificial preservatives protect us from exposure to bacteria. The truth is that they really care very little about protecting the public’s health. They just want to protect the company’s bottom-line profits. I’m all in favor of businesses making money, but not at my expense. If they wanted to, they could easily use natural preservatives that are completely safe, but they would have to change their manufacturing processes, as well. Natural oils would need to be cold-pressed to help prevent rancidity. These processes cost more. Not to mention the fact that the oils that they use are unnatural and cannot be cold-pressed. When a company uses the best manufacturing processes, we don’t have to ask questions about are parabens bad, because they don’t include them for other reasons. One of the dangers of parabens is allergic reaction. They are, in fact, the most common cause of allergic reaction, followed closely by fragrance ingredients. The best manufacturer, in my opinion, set out to make something that was completely safe, free of the most common allergens. Are parabens bad if you have allergy-prone or sensitive skin? The answer to that question is clear and easy; yes. They cause reactions of varying severity. People commonly see redness, itching and rashes. In the worst cases, the preservatives cause a nearly intolerable burning sensation. They are irritating to the eyes, which is why the package directions explain the necessary steps to take if the solutions get into the eyes. Understanding the dangers of parabens is important, because we are often exposed to chemicals like this on a daily basis. Limiting our exposure to unnatural substances could be one of the best things that we can do for our long-term health. Most of the cancer research, so far, has concerned early detection and treatment, but more and more scientists are suggesting that prevention is our best defense. We can take a step in that direction by assuming that “yes” is the answer to; are parabens bad. Now that you know a little more about the dangers of parabens, you might start looking for parabens-free products. There are a number on the market. Kathleen P. Walsh has been connected with skin care for more than a decade and advocates the use of natural skin care.
