There is less caffeine in green tea than there is in coffee. That’s why many doctors say that drinking the tea is better for your health than drinking coffee. One doctor says that you can lose 10 pounds in six weeks by switching from coffee to green tea. Dr Nicholas Perricone, a dermatologist, author and self-proclaimed anti-aging expert, made that announcement on the Oprah Winfrey Show. Some researchers agree with what Perricone has to say. Others are unsure. There is no doubt that the diet he recommends is healthy. Whether or not it is the “healthiest” is really a matter of opinion. There are some things that we know and others that we do not. We know that fish and lean poultry are better meat selections than beef or pork. We know that whole grains are better than processed flour. Some studies have shown that catechin supplementation was beneficial for increasing calories burned while the body is at rest and during exercise. Other studies have been inconclusive. Researchers found no additional benefit. One study indicates that the catechins do not induce weight loss, but do inhibit an enzyme that plays a role in cancer. The caffeine in green tea is thought to be responsible for the improvement that is seen in cognitive performance. It seems to help you think more clearly and remember items faster. The latest studies indicate that moderate caffeine-intake reduces your risk of Alzheimer’s. By moderate, they mean less than 500mg per day. Any more than that can cause headaches, insomnia and anxiety. Pretty much everything is about moderation. A glass of red wine every day is good for you. A bottle is bad. The amount of caffeine in green tea varies between 10 and 80mg per cup. Since there is really no way to be sure how much you are getting, it is best to use the highest amount for calculating daily caffeine intake. Five 8 ounce cups per day should be your max. One research group says that amount can help your body burn 70 to 80 extra calories per day. The amount of catechins per cup varies greatly, as well. Most health experts are recommended at least 100mg per day of these potent antioxidants. Studies indicate that they reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease and arthritis. In order to get that amount, you really need a good supplement. The caffeine in green tea supplements would be no more than 10mg, unless the manufacturer adds more.
