Don't Skimp on Your Hockey Skate Socks!

Fitness,Sports
Hockey may be the most physically demanding and aggressive sport in existence. Which is why we like it so much. It requires large men to fly around a relatively small ice hockey rink carrying "L"-shaped weapons of destruction, also known as hockey sticks. It requires endurance, strength and stamina, which players use to try and get a very small object, the puck, into a well-guarded net. You can't be a wimp and play hockey.

It is also a sport played and enjoyed by people of all ages and gender, including women and children. If you are going to play hockey, or are responsible for dressing a child who will be playing hockey, then the right equipment is essential for preventing injury and making the sport enjoyable. This equipment includes the obvious items such as skates, a cup, and a stick, but it also includes things you might not have thought about, such as a really good pair of socks.

Hockey socks, by strict definition, are more like leg warmers that fit over a player's shin guards than actual socks. They are important, but also very important are the real socks that a player wears under his skates. This article focuses on what a player should look for in a sock to wear beneath his skates.

The number one requirement for hockey is that is be played on ice while wearing ice skates. So even when it is played indoors, it is still quite a cold sport. It is therefore imperative that your hockey socks keep your feet warm. It is also highly suggested that you wear socks that wick moisture away from your feet. You will play better and enjoy the game more if your feet are not wet or sweaty.

Merino wool is a fiber that meets the above guidelines extremely well. Merino wool is made from the wool from Merino sheep, which produce a very high grade of wool. The wool is soft and comfortable and is an outstanding insulator. Merino wool also does a great job pulling moisture away from your skin.

Compression is also a feature you should look for in a hockey sock. Your lower body takes a beating in hockey. Compression socks hold your muscles in place, reducing vibration, which alleviates soreness. There are countless accounts from athletes who state that they have much less soreness the day after a sporting event when wearing compression socks. A final benefit of compression socks is they help improve circulation, which will help keep your feet warm and comfortable.

As far as sock thickness, it is better to use a thin sock, which will allow for a better sense of feel and more skate control. It might seem like going for a thin sock is counterintuitive to the idea of wearing a warm sock, but that is not true. High thread count athletic socks can be both thin and warm enough for sporting applications such as hockey.

Wearing seamless socks is also a great idea. After a while, seams can cause your feet pain. Seamless socks are much more comfortable and will usually last longer.

If you are going to play a physically demanding sport like hockey, you should give yourself every advantage so that you stay injury-free and comfortable. Picking the right socks is a good start. Swiftwick socks are high performance socks made for high performance people. Swiftwick custom hockey socks have superior moisture wicking qualities, as well as the perfect amount of compression.
