While construction is a necessity to maintain our roads and highways and ensure their safety, they often lead to inconvenient traffic jams. The inconvenience caused by road construction is the least of concerns, however. They also create legitimate safety concerns for both drivers and construction workers. According to The National Work Zone Safety Information Clearinghouse, car accidents that occurred in construction zones resulted in over 800 fatalities in 2007 alone. Although there are a number of state and federal laws governing construction zones in an effort to keep construction zones safe for both workers and drivers, accidents do occur. There are a number of different factors created due to road construction that can lead to accidents including: • Uneven lanes • Inadequate signage • Narrow lanes • Inadequate barricades • Confusing signage • Poorly lit construction areas Uneven lanes created by road construction are a popular cause of car accidents. Such uneven lanes often cause top-heavy vehicles to roll over unexpectedly. Uneven lanes also cause passenger vehicles to swerve, and 18-wheelers to jackknife. These incidents almost always lead to catastrophic accidents involving multiple vehicles. Tractor-trailers, 18-wheelers, or large trucks pose threats on the road due to their size, but the risks they pose are exacerbated when faced with road construction. These large vehicles are harder to maneuver, and take much longer to stop. It is also difficult for smaller passenger vehicles to pass 18-wheelers, especially when the lanes have been narrowed due to construction. Barriers are often set up surrounding construction areas in an effort to protect the workers. These barriers, however, can prove to be dangerous because they can cause vehicles to lose control or roll when they collide with the concrete barriers. Poorly lit construction areas are particularly dangerous because it makes it much more difficult for drivers to see the workers on the road. Although construction workers wear orange, reflective vests, when driving at night they are still easily missed. Road construction is a dangerous, hazardous job, but it is definitely a necessity. Without construction workers unmaintained roads would cause accidents to drivers as well. Whether you are a construction worker who has been injured in a car accident at work, or a driver who was involved in a car accident in a construction zone, you may be entitled to receive compensation.
