Fish used to play an important part in our diet. I remember when I was a child, we used to eat fish two or three times per week. Now, however with the oceans being so full of pollutants, the fish have accumulated fish oil toxins in their flesh and it is no longer safe to eat so much fish. Because of the oceans pollution, the fish have toxins like mercury and PCBs etc in their flesh. When the oil is extracted from the fish, the oil has these pollutants as well. We need to purify the oil by using a process called molecular distillation to remove these impurities. Once the oil has been through this process, the oil is as clean as you can get it. This oil is sometimes called pharmaceutical grade oil. There are no fish oil toxins in it. An awful lot of the oil on the market has been transported long distances in tankers. From one country to another. This oil is not always fresh. However the companies are very clever when it comes to hiding oil that has gone rancid. They put additives in it. They add flavor to it. Be aware. I always advocate going to the companies website to check if the oil has been purified and by what method. I like to check that the fish oil has been processed close to where the fish are landed. This is to ensure freshness. I like to see where the fish are sourced from. This is to see if the oil was processed from fish that are naturally rich in the Omega 3 fatty acids DHA and EPA. You see, not all fish are rich in the important fatty acids. Some have virtually no Omega 3 fatty acids at all. As far as I am concerned the species Hoki fit this description. They are rich in the Omega 3 fatty acids. They come from the deep, cold pristine waters of the Southern Ocean off the coast of New Zealand. Even though the water is regarded as clean, the oil still needs to be purified. To summarize : I would only recommend oil that comes from fish that are processed close to where the fish are landed, to ensure freshness. I would make sure the oil has been through the process called molecular distillation to remove the impurities. Use an oil that is higher in DHA than EPA.
