Repairing or remodeling an old christening dress

Family & Parenting,Fashion & Cosmetics,Hobbies
Little information exists on the internet when it comes to instructions on how to repair an old family heirloom especially when it is an old christening dress that has been passed on from one generation to another and over the many years, the dress got damaged or torn, or one of the stitches got loose. If you have a similar problem, here are some tips to keep in mind when sewing up or repairing these loose patches and regions. Pay particular attentions to these regions.

Sleeves

A christening dress comes with different designs and styles. The traditional design of white and loose flowing dress has been replaced by newer designs of shorter length. The sleeves vary from short sleeved to sleeveless and long sleeved dresses. It is common that sometimes the sleeves get torn or the sleeve band gets loose. Take particular care in looking at the sleeves and sew using the same stitching style as the old ones.

Collar

Over many years, the collar of a christening dress might not look cool especially where the dress had been handmade and had been passed on from one generation to another. A spoilt dress collar can annoyingly be a big nut to crack. But why worry when by only making a few stitches on the dress, you can make it look as new as possible.

How can you do that?

The collar can be completely replaced by cutting it out and adding a piece of fabric of the same material with a trendier look. Isn’t there a way that I can preserve the old look and make the dress a bit fashionable? This is the question that most concerned mothers ask when they want to repair their daughters’ christening dresses. Yes, it’s very possible. Just add a new accessory to give your daughter’s dress a whole new look, or better still visit your local dress maker and ask him to stitch or sew a cool embroidery to give your dress a completely new look and feel.

Making adjustments

Another common scenario is where a parent may feel like adjusting an existing christening dress to have a new trendy look by just stitching a few things here and there. You can insert a lace into a dress that had no ornamentation. This is an adjustment that time demands. Fashion has a way of catching up with old dresses too if only the right adjustments are made. When making such adjustments to any christening outfit, make sure the color of your additional material is the same as the original dress. Any additional fabric should complement the existing cloth.

Keep this in mind

The repair of dresses can get you into deeper financial expenses. It is better to first consider if you really need to make an adjustment to an existing christening outfit or not. Make sure your actions won’t be regretted latter. A dress that has been in the family for many years has a much higher sentimental value and should be left intact without any further additions. Preserving and keeping a christening dress (interesting to know is that the German term is taufkleid) in the right way will never warrant any kind of repairs.
