These bacteria can take up nutrients faster and grow more rapidly than algae and aquatic weeds; this results in the bacteria out competing algae and weeds for available food. In order to encourage the growth of good bacteria the first step is to ensure proper water aeration. By installing an aeration system in the bottom of a pond or lake, the water is properly circulated and oxygenated to encourage the growth of beneficial bacteria. In order to get and sustain the levels of beneficial bacteria needed to maintain clear water, however, the existing bacteria in the water must be augmented by adding supplemental natural bacteria products sold at most pond and lake supply stores. Discouraging Waterfowl
Most ponds and lakes attract waterfowl, such as ducks and geese. While their presence can add to the beauty of a pond or lake, their waste can contribute to the pollution of the water. This can pose considerable health risks to both humans and animals. Creating vegetated buffers along the edges of a lake or pond and using repellants that do not harm the water fowl can help discourage them from using the water, reducing the health risks to humans and animals. Effective Landscaping
The landscaping surrounding a lake or pond can greatly affect the water’s quality. These plants often act as a filter, helping to reduce or prevent contaminants from polluting the water. Landscaping around a pond or lake should consist of vegetation native to the area that doesn’t require artificial fertilizers or chemicals to stay green and vibrant.
