This article will serve to put a story with the name that’s filled the recent headlines. Melvin Kay was born in 1943 to a father from Oklahoma, who died at the age of 47, and an Italian mother who served as a homemaker. His childhood consisted of a lot of moving, relocating frequently to different parts of California. As a child, Melvin Kay helped the family by assisting in their various farming endeavors. He ended up dropping out of school at a young age to instead obtain regular employment and begin earning an income. His first regular job after dropping out was at a lumber yard, which possibly planted the seeds of the fencing industry that would become his future. In his mid-20’s, he partnered with a friend and obtained a loan to start his first fencing company, and although the rest is history, there were plenty of peaks and valleys along the way. Later into his 30’s he moved out of state and opened up another business, but one that would eventually fail and take him back to his first instinct. This second business was that of a sawmill. He would suffer a disfiguring injury to his hand, and return to California. He renamed his fence company Golden State Fence Company in 1984 and it wasn’t until the housing boom of the 1990’s that he really began to flourish. During this time period, he expanded from five employees to several hundred, actually 750 in his prime. He credits his employee loyalty to his generous pay practices. A great number of those on the payroll were related to each other, as employees spread the word of the opportunity to their friends and family. In the remainder of the 1990’s and the early 2000’s, Golden State Fence Company was earning $150 million per year. Though it has been affected by the housing slump and economic downturn, the company is steadily maintaining its status at the biggest in its industry for Southern California. Currently, Golden State Fence Company and its unfailingly ambitious owner continue to pursue and be awarded national and state government contracts for fencing services. Now, pushing 70, it doesn’t appear that Melvin Kay is going anywhere any time soon. Melvin Kay makes great fences so you don’t have to. To learn more please visit: http://fenceworksus.wordpress.com/
