This article introduces the style of writing I applyed in writing my books, known as a Povel. My books are mysterious and magical and mysterious and I describe how this style I invented work well in telling the stories. Now what exactly is a Povel? It's highly unlikely that you find such a word in the dictionary. And Povel is not the name of some boy from another land (but it very well could be). No, for the purpose of this article, a Povel is not quite a poem and not quite a novel either. It is meant to have some of the lyrical rhythm of a poem with some of the narrative of a novel. In other words, a Povel can be said to be a poem disguised as a novel. This is not to be confused with the Epic Poems of Homer or Dante's Trilogy. I will describe my first two books in this manner. Night, was released in 2009, while Another Night, which had its' release earlier this year. These stories, mostly told in vignettes of various lengths, revolve around the fairy tale of Night and can be likened to a painting that doesn't provide a significant amount of detail but just enough to keep the imagination from wandering too far off the path. The idea of Night came to me years ago while I was in a multi-media /performance arts class at the University of Colorado of Denver. It was when I presented a short piece at the end of that semester that I fell in love with Night. I found something inexplicitly enchanting about it. A thought arose in my mind of "What if Night was a person? What would she or he look like?" Obviously they would be beautiful and they would sometimes come down when they would call. But I felt there was something more to Night. So to truly tell the story about the beings of Night, I broke them up into two parts. There were those of the Dark who's purpose was to frighten people and then there were those from the Other Side of Night who came to inspire the dreamer, comfort the lonely or bring lovers together. These two sides were neither bad nor good but rather different. These beings of Night, who's entire existence in the nighttime, and the relationships the form with humans, is the bases of Night and Another Night. Although Night had its' share of good reviews, it is Another Night that completes and binds the books. Another Night is both a prequel and a sequel, meaning it describes what happened before and after the first book while intertwining the two stories. A short summary of the second book follows. Alford was 12 when he discovered that Night is more than it appears, that is to say that there are these hauntingly beautiful beings out there who embody the essence and spirit of Night. That is when Alford met Evan, who was from the Dark Part of Night. Although Evan came first to frighten Alford, he found himself falling for the boy's 18-year-old sister, Mary Elizabeth. Evan's more than frequent visits led him to be captured and forced into day. Evan must choose whether to pursue his growing feelings for Mary Elizabeth or to return to Night. Evan chooses to disappear on a bus. 30 years have passed when Alford hires a private investigator by the name of Marc to find the whereabouts of Evan. After finding Evan, Marc too discovers the secret of Night and is visited by a beautiful woman from the Other Side of the Night. This affair had dire circumstances. Decisions have to be made and secrets are revealed. Will Evan find his humanity and be reunited with Mary Elizabeth? Will true love overcome the darkness of Night? Is Another Night the Great American Povel? It's possible. I am not aware of any other claim of being a Povel. I could have called this type of writing a Noem. But that would sound too much like a Gnome.
