Ayodhya is a ancient city and bears a great religious value. Now this place comes under the Faizabad District. It is 140km far from Lucknow, the capital city of Uttarpradesh. The place was known as Saket. Based on Hindu mythology, this place is regarded as the birth place of Lord Rama. It is a holy city of Hindus. It is well mentioned in the great Hindu epic Ramayan. This place belongs to an average elevation of 93 metres. The place is ideally located on the right bank of the river Saryu and a focal center of Hindu pilgrims. According to etymology, The city is named after King Ayudh which is known as the forefathers of Lord Rama. The name is derived from a sanskrit word 'yudh'. As it is a very old city so the place experienced many old dynasties. Once it was the capital of ancient Kosala Kingdom. Legends says, it was known as the capital of Awadh during the time of Nizams. Since the British period this place came to known as Ayodhya. The city is deeply linked with the old stories of lord Rama, the so it is distinctly revered as one of seven most holy places for Hindus in India. Ayodhya is not only a Hindu pilgrim but also well significant place for Buddhist and Jain People. The city boasts of many historical structures which symbolizes the Buddhism and Jainism. The place experienced Mughal dynasty so it is said that the Hindu temple was destroyed and a mosque was built in that place during this period. Later in 1992 the Mosque was demolished. Since then this place is highlighted for this controversy. Ramjanamabhoomi, Fort Calcutta, Faizabad, Gulab Bari, Ayodhya, Tulsi Udyan, Ram ki Pairi, Dasrath Bhavan, Guptar Ghat and Kanak Bhavan are some most visited attractions in and around of Ayodhya. Shravan Jhoola Mela, Parikrama Mela, Ram Navmi, Rathyatra, Saryu Snan, , Ram Vivah, Ramayan Mela and vijay dashmi are some prominent festivals of this place. Here tourists can collect typical artifacts and souvenirs. This place is well visited religious place with antique value, versatile history and tradition. Lucknow airport is the nearest airport and it is 140km far from this place. Ayodhya offers extreme climate with hot summers and pleasant winters. October to March is the best time to visit Ayodhya. Shopping in this legendary place would be a different experience. Obviously one could not expect malls and complexes in such a religious destination, but the small gallies and bazaars in this are swarming with public at all probable times. With its typical artifacts and souvenirs these markets have their own characteristics, which makes your shopping a delightful experience. There are wide range of accommodation in Ayodhya including hotels, dharamshalas and guest houses.
